A local allotment association wrote to us with their ambition to resurrect an old hand dug disused well to supply water at their allotments which would fulfill the needs of their community. We carried out investigative works on the old disused well, to determine its construction material, diameter, depth, standing water level, depth and quality, and we carried out a test to determine its replenishment rate. With promising results we endeavoured to bring this disused well back to life. We lifted out the debris from the well using a combination unit suction/jetting tanker and by high pressure water jetting, it enabled the silt to be sucked out for disposal. Our confined space entry team enabled the debris to be removed, and we deepened the well by 1.8 metres. To prepare the well for its new lease of life we fabricated and fixed a lockable steel plate with padlock over the wellhead for safety and to potentially keep the water cleaner. The society wished to have a traditional cast iron hand pump fitted for their ongoing watering needs.
